Description

Economic, Social and Territorial Cohesion Policy
9,1 billion euros
2021-2027

The European Regional Development Fund, more commonly known as FEDER, is one of the European Union's main European funding programs aimed at promoting economic, social and territorial cohesion between regions. Since its creation in 1975, the ERDF has played a crucial role in reducing economic and social disparities between different European regions.

Objectives and priorities

The central objective of the ERDF is to strengthen the competitiveness and cohesion of European regions.

To do this, it invests in projects and initiatives that promote economic development, job creation, innovation, energy transition, infrastructure improvement and the preservation of cultural heritage. The ERDF intervenes in a wide range of areas such as industry, information technology, environment, research and development, professional training, tourism, and much more.

Each budgetary period of the European Union, called a "multiannual financial framework", defines the specific priorities of the ERDF. These priorities are generally in line with the main objectives of the European Union, such as the promotion of innovation, environmental sustainability, social inclusion and smart and sustainable economic growth.

Funding method

The ERDF operates according to the principle of co-financing. This means that projects benefiting from ERDF funding must also receive funding from other sources, often national or regional. The co-financing rate may vary depending on the level of economic development of the region concerned. Less developed regions can receive a higher co-financing rate.

The funds allocated to the ERDF are distributed between the different regions and countries of the European Union based on criteria such as GDP per capita. Regional and national authorities are generally responsible for the selection and management of projects financed by the ERDF.

Achievements

The ERDF has had a significant impact on the regional development of the European Union. It contributes to the modernization of infrastructure, job creation, technological innovation, the transition to more sustainable economies, and the improvement of the quality of life in many regions. Thanks to its targeted investments, the ERDF contributes to reducing economic disparities between regions, while strengthening cohesion and solidarity within the European Union. Thanks to its commitment to regional cohesion, the ERDF continues to contribute to the Union's objective of creating a united and prosperous Europe.
